The days when the majority of tourists to the UK were American have long disappeared and the current state of the USDollar means that it is unlikely we will be flooded with USA tourists over the summer of 2008 But where do the majority of tourists come from
What about domestic visitors The good news is that the higher the socio-economic group the more likely people are to holiday in the UK In group A (the very posh ones!) 25.8% of people had taken a recent holiday in the UK while only 21.5% had gone abroad. This is the only social group which holidays more in the UK than abroad. In comparison C1 (most of us) 22.4 % had had a holiday in the UK but over 26% had gone abroad Other social factors are that people who holiday in the UK are more likely to be married and aged 35 to 44 One very important point which was high lighted by the report was that the internet is the most widely used source of info when planning holidays with 19.7% of adults using it as their primary source Travel agents 11.2% Family and friends 9.6% Little importance was given to teletext, adverts, tourist info and accommodation providers which are all under 2%
